R-Mast, which is abbreviation of Development Program for the Career Paths of Experts related to Marine Science and Technology, was accepted as a part of "Young researchers training program for promoting innovation 2011" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

The objective of this program is to construct a system for young Ph.D. holders (including both Postdoctors and Doctoral Course Students) within Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) in order to foster the core of innovative activities not only in a specialized academic field but also in various industrial fields. The program of R-MaST involves Long-term Internship, Lectures, Workshops, and other support activities.

Focusing on the monitoring and investigation of the oceans, which is the major role of TUMSAT, this program provides an opportunity to match talented persons who have been trained by TUMSAT with industries that require such people, by strengthening cooperation between TUMSAT and related companies and institutions.

In order to diversify the career paths of postdoctors engaged in research at TUMSAT, this program cultivates professional engineers who have advanced knowledge and technology. These professionals can contribute to companies and institutions in vessel-based oceanographic research, environmental assessment, investigation of fish resources and investigation of mineral resources.

Through the programs of R-MaST such as the Long-term Internship and Lectures, we would support making cooperation between the young Ph.D. holders and various industrial companies. The period of the funding by MEXT and JST for this program is five years (from 2011 to 2015). We hope that the activities of R-MaST would be helpful for many young Ph.D. holders in order to make the future of their careers visible.
